My Life Story: Gary Joe Greenstreet

March 13, 1933 – January 11, 2013

Gary
Greenstreet was a long term resident of Lamar, Colorado. He and his wife, Marilyn, lived in the same house on Willow Valley Road for 53 years. He died on the morning of January 11, 2013, at Boulder Community Hospital. Gary was surrounded by his entire family that last week, including all three grandkids. Gary has resided in Boulder since his wife’s death in 2010. His son, Greg and wife, Lael, live in Boulder with their two children, Tamar, 6 and Elan, 3. Gary had many spirited grandpa adventures during his time in Boulder! Daughter Kristin, and husband, Paul live in Glenwood Springs, CO. Their daughter, Hannah, lives in SouthLake Tahoe, CA and traveled to Boulder that week. We did a family blessing during the week of Gary’s hospitalization; he knew we all were there. Strength and grace are two qualities he showed throughout his life and to the very end.

Gary was born in Vilas, CO in 1933 to Vern “Doc” and Cleo Greenstreet. He grew up in southeast Colorado until he attended CU Boulder, where he met his wife, Marilyn. Upon college graduation for both of them, they married and set out on a big adventure to Vicenza, Italy, where Gary was stationed in the US Army. In 1957, they returned home to Lamar with a daughter, Kristin. Ten years later in 1967, Greg was born and their family was complete. For over 50 years, Gary was a distributer for the Adolph Coors Company. He ran the family business upon his own father’s illness. Gary was involved in every community project and non-profit effort available. He chaired many committees and spread his kindness and generosity community-wide. Gary and Marilyn sang in the choir at the United Methodist Church. Song and music were part of our world every day. Gary could play the piano by heart, no sheet music needed.

The Greenstreet family had many outings and adventures over the years. Gary always had a video camera in hand, especially for the many fishing trips to the local lakes (complete with water skis in case the fish weren’t biting) and long road trips in the family camper, across the country, following Greg and Kristin’s next sporting event. Some of his favorite adventures were the annual Lake Powell trips, complete with the camper and the infamous green “Glastron” boat! And most profoundly, he enjoyed numerous Cabo San Lucas trips to the Club Cascadas, accompanied by the entire family.

We are blessed to have the memories (and most of them on DVD thanks to Gary)! Did you know Gary Greenstreet? What’s your favorite memory? What story comes to mind? Gary was loved by every one who crossed his path. His sweet smile and bright blue eyes defined his life’s intention of compassionate giving. He was the best dad ever; many neighborhood children thought of him as “dad”. He is a forever reminder to all to make the most of life each and every day! In lieu of a memorial service, the family will be celebrating Gary’s 80th birthday this spring. Please send your favorite “Gary stories” and what you remembered most about him. Post them to the Peacock website (online condolences) at www.peacockfuneralhome.com. Or mail to Kristin Greenstreet, 1514 Bennett Ave., Glenwood Springs, Colorado, 81601.
