A funeral service for longtime Holly, Colorado resident, Edith M. Barnes, was held at 1:00 PM Thursday February 16, 2012 at the Cowboy Church in Holly-204 S. 5th St. in Holly.Robin Van Kempen officiated the service.A private family in-urnment service will be held at a later date.
Visitation for Edith was held from 11:00 AM until service time on Thursday February 16, 2012 at the Cowboy Church in Holly.Edith Marie Wagner Barnes, 97, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at Cove Court Assisted Living in Longmont, CO. She was born on Feb. 27, 1914, in Holly, CO., to Alexander and Molly Wagner, Germans from Russia who immigrated to the U.S. in 1908.
Edith grew up on a farm north of Holly with her four sisters and three brothers. She attended school in Holly and graduated from Holly High School in 1932. She married A. Frank Barnes on April 1, 1935, in Holly. They farmed on shares, first near Ault, and then in the Longmont-Mead area for more than 40 years. They bought their first farm in the 1950s adjacent to the St. Vrain River northeast of Del Camino. Edith was a devoted farm wife and loving mother to their four daughters. She took medical courses and worked from time to time as a nurse's aide. She became a Christian at an early age, and she and her family were lifelong members of the Assemblies of God. Edith returned to her roots and purchased a home in Holly in the late 1970s and lived there until ill health brought her to Longmont, where she could be closer to her daughters, earlier this year.
She is survived by two sisters, Lillian and Esther, and one brother, Vernon (Diana).
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Pam and Martha and brothers Chuck and Buddy.
She is also survived by her daughters: Janice Smith (Bud) of Bellevue, Wash.; Helen Goree (late Robert) of Henderson, NV.; Donna Newton (Marcus) of Greeley; and Judy DeCino (Tony) of Milliken. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Scott Smith, Robin Van Kempen, Robert Goree, Kim Smith, Laura Senti, David Newton, Daniel DeCino and Thomas DeCino; 12 great-grandchildren: Ian and Anna Smith; Thomas III, Randall, Trevor and Trenton Van Kempen; Michael, Daniel and Caroline Smith; Laurianne, David and Ethan Senti; and three great-great-grandchildren: Amara, Aiden, and Thomas IV. Edith is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends.
