A Service of Celebration for lifelong Lamar resident, Edith M. Brown was held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Peacock Family Chapel with Brother Jim Pritchard of the Church of Christ in Shawnee, Oklahoma officiating. Per Mrs. Brown’s request, cremation followed the chapel service and a private family interment of the ashes will be held at a later date.
Visitation for Mrs. Brown was held from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Peacock Funeral Home. The Brown family received friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM.
Edith Marie Brown, daughter of Lee Carter and Esther Edith (Nettleton) Carter, was born on January 18, 1931 in Lamar, Colorado. She departed this life on June 10, 2013 at the age of 82.
Edith attended school in Lamar and graduated from Lamar Union High. While growing up, she enjoyed washing dishes with her sisters and singing. Her favorite story was her older sister, Ellen, always seemed to need to go to the bathroom when it was time to do the dishes. Her dad would peek his head in and ask if they needed any help after they were done.
Edith and her friends, Lois Nidey, went to California and stayed nine months. They got to see the Rose Bowl Parade.
Edith met a young man named Darrell Brown at church. They started dating and about a year later, they were married on June 19, 1959. The two moved to Coolidge, Kansas and lived there until 1961. A daughter was born on May 4, 1960, Sheryl. After they moved back to Lamar, Johnny was born on October 26, 1961 and David was born on July 8, 1963.
Edith and Darrell lived in Lamar and attended the Church of Christ all her life. Edith always welcomed her children’s friends into her home. She always had a smile on her face and loved to have company. She was all about family.
Edith leaves behind her loving husband Darrell, of 54, years, three children – Sheryl (Gene) Burton of Lamar; Johnny Brown of Severna Park, Maryland; and David (Denise) Brown of Newton, Alabama; six grandchildren – Nathan, Taylor, Mitchell, Jonathan, Adam, and Morgan and one great grandchild – Destiny; and by two sisters – Ellen Mae of Bryan, Texas and Mildred Nidey of Lamar. She had many friends and other relatives and she will be missed by all.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the Lamar Area Hospice either direct or through the funeral home office.
