Cleo D. Coen
A memorial service for former Lamar, Colorado resident currently of Aurora, Colorado will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar with Reverend Darren Stroh officiating.
Per Cleo’s request cremation had taken place and there was no visitation.
Cleo was born on January 15, 1930 at Lamar, Colorado to Seth and Helen Coen and passed away on February 3, 2017 in Denver, Colorado.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Felter Coen, his brother Don Coen, and four children, Cecilia Miller (Dennis), Pam Coen, Steve Coen (Sandra), and Melissa Wharry (Justin). He leaves seven grandchildren; Ryan Miller, Seth Coen, Shawn Miller, Nathan Miller, Molly Coen, Gage Wharry and Cord Wharry and three step-grandchildren, Melissa Olander, Michelle Nobles (Mike) and Megan Olander and one step-grandchild, Estelle Nobles.
Cleo grew up in Lamar, Colorado and graduated from Lamar Community College. He was the owner of Coen Construction Co. and specialized in residential excavation in the Lamar area until the 1980’s when he relocated to the South Denver metro area. He retired from the construction industry in 2005. Cleo and his wife were active members of the First Baptist Church of Lamar where he served on the Board of Deacons. They attended Mississippi Avenue Baptist Church in Aurora, Colorado.
Cleo served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska. On returning to Colorado in 1955 he was married to his wife, Shirley. He was always athletic and pursued running as a hobby. He ran many 5K and 10K charity races throughout his life and won the Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon for his age group in 2001. Recently he retired his running shoes and had taken up cycling. In the past, Cleo enjoyed traveling coast to coast with his family, fishing trips in the summer and hunting in the fall.
